Use bright and dark solid colors. A defective pixel should stand out because it does not match the surrounding screen.

02 · HOW TO TEST

How to check your screen for dead pixels

  1. Clean the display. Dust and small marks can look exactly like a pixel defect.
  2. Reduce reflections. Dim the room and avoid bright light shining directly onto the screen.
  3. Start with white. Look for tiny dark dots that remain in the same position.
  4. Switch to black. Look for bright dots or colored points.
  5. Check red, green and blue. These colors make individual subpixel problems easier to spot.
  6. Move your eyes across the whole panel. Check corners, edges and the center.
Best practice: If you see a suspicious dot, switch through several colors. A single color is not enough to classify the problem.

Dead pixel vs. stuck pixel vs. bright pixel

Dead pixel

A dead pixel or failed pixel may remain dark when surrounding pixels are displaying an image. On a white screen, it can appear as a small black or dark dot.

Stuck pixel

A stuck pixel may remain on in one or more subpixel colors. Switching between red, green, blue, black and white can make it easier to identify.

Bright or hot pixel

A bright point that stays visible on dark screens may be caused by a pixel or subpixel that is not switching off as expected.

What should you do if you find a bad pixel?

First, do not assume that every unusual dot is a failed pixel. Repeat the test, clean the panel and check the same location on several colors. If the point remains fixed, take a clear photograph and check the manufacturer's pixel policy and return or warranty terms.

Some online tools advertise methods to "fix" stuck pixels by rapidly flashing colors. Such methods may sometimes help with a stuck subpixel, but they cannot repair a physically failed pixel. We recommend treating pixel-fixing techniques cautiously and avoiding force or pressure on the panel.

What is a dead pixel test?

It displays solid colors across your screen so you can visually identify pixels or subpixels that do not behave like the surrounding display.

How do I know if a pixel is dead?

Check it on several solid colors. A pixel that consistently remains dark while surrounding pixels change may be dead, but further testing is useful before reaching a conclusion.

How do I find a stuck pixel?

Cycle through red, green, blue, white and black. A point that stays a particular color or brightness while the rest of the screen changes may indicate a stuck subpixel.

Can a dead pixel be fixed?

A physically failed pixel generally cannot be repaired with software. Some stuck-pixel behavior may change, but results are not guaranteed.

Does this test work on phones?

Yes. Open the page on the phone, enter fullscreen if supported and inspect the display carefully.

How many colors should I test?

At minimum, check black, white, red, green and blue. Yellow, cyan, magenta and gray can provide additional clues.
